World Water Day

Hello and Happy Saturday! I don't usually post on Saturdays but I recently became part of the Global Team of 200. As part of this team, we committed to sharing about certain topics, events, causes etc. and today is World Water Day!

WaterAid is one of the main organizations behind World Water Day, and as part of the day, they are encouraging everyone to tell a water story. Honestly, the first thing that came to my mind when thinking about water in my life was the fact that I have been opting out of washing my hair lately (twice a week is more than enough, right?). I jokingly tell my friends it is that I am doing my part to conserve water.  Truthfully though, washing my hair just hasn't been on the top of my priority list, it takes time and energy that I would rather spend elsewhere.  This reveals so much about my life and good fortune;

I can choose where I spend the majority of my time because I have the unbelievable luxury of clean water, running out of my faucets at the flip of a knob.  Not only that, but I can choose to have ice cold water for my drinking pleasure, piping hot for my showering delight, and everything in between.

This seemingly simple occurrence is actually an amazing gift:

768 million people do not have access to safe drinking water. [1]

Women in developing countries typically walk an average of 4 miles each day to obtain water. [1]

I don't have time to wash my hair, yet so many of my fellow sisters around the globe don't have time to attend school or pursue other interests because their primary task is getting water. In fact, in Africa women spend 26% of their time gathering water. [2]  Friends, that is 1/4 of their life spent. gathering. water.

Can you imagine the impact that these women could have on their families, their communities, and the world, if they could spend 1/4 their life learning, creating, working, pursuing dreams and passions, LIVING?

We can make a difference ~ Let's help tell a different story for the millions of people without access to clean drinking water.
