Rishi, traditionally leather workers, for centuries have lived at the margins of Bengali society. Generally landless, with no easy access to schools, many struggled in a continual search for work to survive. In addition to income generation, Rishilpi conducts relief and development work in rural Bangladesh communities. THE MAKER: Mahaguthi markets the handicrafts of more than 1,000 Nepali artisans working in 150 workshops. Most of the artisans are from remote and mountainous areas; among them 85 percent are women who use traditional craft skills while working in their own home. Mahaguthi's focus is to promote the well-being of artisans, to provide employment and to embrace and promote the principles of fair trade. Artisans receive medical and education allowances, paid leave and maternity leave. Mahaguthi's parent organization was founded in 1926 with the objective of making the poor self-reliant. The founder was exiled to India and worked with Mahatma Gandhi before returning to Nepal to do rehabilitation work with women and their children. THE MAKER: CORR stands for Christian Organization for Relief and Rehabilitation. Corr–The Jute Works is a women’s nonprofit handicraft marketing trust and exporter of quality handicrafts. Based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, The Jute Works represents more than 4,000 rural women artisans in 154 workshops. The Jute Works strives to empower rural women through handicraft production, animal husbandry and small job creation projects. The group works with women regardless of caste, creed and race. It provides job training, develops leadership skills and generates awareness of the women’s plight. It promotes thrift, self–help and democratic practice among the women’s handicraft groups. Members share ownership, participate in decision-making and receive the benefits of surplus production. The Jute Works is one of Bangladesh’s largest exporter of handicrafts. Ten Thousand Villages has purchased products from The Jute Works since 1974.
